Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is known as the “Pharmacy of the Forest”. The small tree, with distinctive heart shaped leaves, is a significant and sacred plant to Maori. Among its many healing abilities, it is reputed to soothe insect bites and stings, skin rashes, eczema, poor circulation, bruises, wounds, burns, aches and pains.
Kawakawa leaves contain volatile oil and two key components of this, Myristicin and Elemicin have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties.
By infusing the leaves in almond oil, these oil soluble constituents are able to be extracted and therefore easily applied to your skin.
